    07.03.11 - Articles

Thanks to everyone who entered our Cliché photo competition. Hundreds of photos were submitted, many of them excellent.

Winner – Taylor Fitz-Gibbon, Backside Noseblunt Slide (Josh Campos)

We liked all of Taylor’s photos (you can see a couple more below), but picked this one for the simple yet strong composition, graphic quality and the abstract, surreal feel given by the out-of-focus foliage in the foreground. The trick is worthy and captured at the perfect moment. In terms of viewpoint, the photographer has positioned himself quite far from the action, allowing us to get a good feel for the surroundings.

You can see more of Taylor’s work on his blog Curb Cut City and his Flickr account.

Second Place – Lisa Kindberg, Crooked Grind (Malene Madsen)

Lisa has a talent for using her surroundings in unusual and unexpected ways when shooting skateboarding. What interested us most about this image (the trick is nothing special) is the clever relationship between the skater and the man (or men) featured on the photographic backdrop. Whether or not the red t-shirt was chosen deliberately by the photographer is irrelevant, the outcome is brilliant and reminded us of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s famous image Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare, in which the jumping figure in the foreground mirrors the poster in the background.

You can see more of Lisa’s work on her website.
