Warriors Weekend 2024 Sci-Fi Edition recap

20.11.2024 Exclusive, Articles

We are pleased to present the official video recap of this year’s Warriors Weekend, the Sci–Fi Edition, which took place on the picturesque shore of Lake Lugano back in September. Organised by the mighty Warriors Family, a Lugano-based crew dating back to 1996 & more recently a non-profit association, the event, which has a strong emphasis on live music, has seen growing numbers of loyal fans in attendance each year, two of which – Dave Morgan & Peter Murphy – we asked to reflect on this year’s sci-fi-themed extravaganza. The video was filmed by Riccardo Gabella, Andrés Bignasca & Alejandro Caceres & edited by Andrés Bignasca. Below, you will also find photos by Roy Clavadetscher.

I attended the Warriors Weekend in Lugano for the first time this summer – a pit stop on my way down to the Vladimir Film Festival. I’ve been wanting to visit this place for many years and my dear friend Alex (Forbes) very kindly hosted me, showing me not just the local skate spots, but also some real good hikes on the surrounding mountains. It’s such a surreal and beautiful location, and combining this with some equally beautiful skateboarding was perfect. Situated on the shores of Lake Lugano, the two mini-ramps set the scene for three days of idyllic scenes, sunsets and even a solid Danzig cover band. I’ve been a big fan of the Warriors family for a long time and have always loved their output and energy, so making it to the weekend had to be done. The Sci-Fi Edition was hilarious – so much fun and creativity. Be it tinfoil costumes and visors or HENGE blowing the roof off the club with their prog-rock wizard funk, Warriors Weekend was really something out of this world. The calibre of skating was ridiculous also – the locals are really fucking good there. Martino (Cattaneo), Schianta (Lepori) and co. all effortlessly destroyed the ramp, not without the help however, of the mighty Jean Jaques crew from Belgium. Cheers to Livio Gritti, Fede Boldini, Kevin Blaser and the Family for putting on such an exciting and wholesome event. I’ll see you on the lake next year.

I met the Warriors on a trip to Barcelona last April and then went on tour with them again in June. Through mates / Instagram, I heard about WW23 (Warriors Weekend 2023) and had to go. It was well worth the five-hour train ride – lots of friends, music and skating and the weather was lovely. They had the best contest format for skating in my opinion – just a jam with three or four people at a time, with some best trick sessions and funny challenges. So obviously I was planning on coming to WW24, except there was the opening event at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne the same weekend, which left me with a tough decision. In the end, it was clear that all my mates would be in Lugano, so that’s where I went. It was a very good choice. The skating was even better than last year and even closer to the lake, which I hadn’t thought possible. The music was great again, especially the Misfits cover set, and there were a lot more people I knew than last year. The Belgians came over in a full van and then went on to Croatia. The Habash boys were there keeping it serious as always – business only. Basel was there, spreading the syndrome, as was the Bern squad – Ramon (Notz) brought home the trophy, ending Kid’s winning streak. Adriano (Alves) and Bambino Lucio won everything else, as expected. Overall, it was a blast and I give many thanks to Fede, Livio, Kevin and the rest of the Warriors for organising it again and again. If you’re looking for a great time in a lovely place, you know where to be next September!
